Our Optometry Practice in Chestermere

Dr. Jennifer Sanchez was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary and her Doctor of Optometry Degree, with honours, at Southern California College of Optometry. Dr. Sanchez worked alongside optometrists at American Veteran Affairs Hospitals and Indian Health Services and practiced co-management with ophthalmologists specializing in refractive and cataract surgery through a clinical externship.

Dr. Sanchez has developed a special interest in pediatric vision care and vision therapy because visual development has a profound effect on learning and education.

Dr. Sanchez enjoys spending quality time with friends and family and is happy to be back in Calgary and the surrounding area, practicing optometry.

Dr. Grace Truong was born and raised in Calgary. She attended Mount Royal University and completed her Bachelor of General Science in 2015. She then earned her Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from Pacific University College of Optometry in 2019.

While at Pacific University, Dr. Truong completed 4 clinical externships, including surgical co-management at Gimbel Eye Centre in Edmonton and an internal rotation at Pacific University centred on ocular disease and contact lenses. In addition, she gained valuable experiences at the VA Medical Center in Spokane, Washington, and the Chemawa Indian Health Center in Salem, Oregon.

Dr. Truong is passionate about eye care and strives to educate her patients on the importance of healthy eyes and vision. She hopes to continue educating and enhancing her patients’ knowledge so everyone receives quality eye care.

Dr. Mark Wood is originally from a small farming town in rural Manitoba. He attended Brandon University for his undergraduate degree, graduating with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. He then attended Midwestern University’s Arizona College of Optometry in Glendale, Arizona.

While at Midwestern, he completed several eye care mission trips as a part of the local Lions Club, including trips to Mexicali and Tijuana. He also completed externships at Marine Corp Air Station in Yuma, Arizona, the Malcolm Randall Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida, and private practice in Franklin, Tennessee. Dr. Wood began practicing in the Calgary area in 2016.

In his spare time, Dr. Wood enjoys curling, hiking, and golfing. He is an active member of the Calgary Society of Optometrists and the Alberta Association of Optometrists.

Dr. Penny has been in private practice in Calgary for over 40 years. She strives to provide excellence in diagnostic vision care, emphasizing the individual’s personal needs. She believes in enhancing a person’s quality of life through excellence in vision care.

Dr. Penny has a degree in Optometry and a Master’s Degree in educational psychology, with special education in reading and learning difficulties. She has a special interest and passion for working with children and adults who have visually related learning difficulties, tracking, focusing, binocular dysfunctions, perceptual delays, and traumatic brain injury. Vision therapy and rehabilitation of these problems have been an integral part of her practice and career.

Dr. Penny has been actively involved in her profession, serving as Chairman of the Alberta College of Optometrists and Registrar, and was involved in the Optometry Examining Board of Optometrists both as question writer and later as Chairman of the board. She is still actively involved in giving seminars and lectures in Alberta and neighbouring provinces on “Vision and its Impact on Learning” and the “Assessment and Treatment of Vision Problems in the Traumatic Brain Injury Patient.”

In her spare time you will find Dr. Penny playing with her grandchildren, gardening, and working on her artwork.
